Vinos-sur-tenerife

Speaking about wines is speaking about a Delicious way to understand the athlantic and volcanic essence. Only the most privileged conditions are able to lead five designations of origin, which are spread out across the length and breadth of the island.  Influenced on its origin by the Portuguese, who are responsible for the first grapevine plantations on the XV century, the wines of Tenerife especially surprise for its variety and for its great quality.

The region of Abona, in which Hotel Suite Villa María is located, is probably one of the most special ones of the island, fundamentally for the original proposal that it offers and the interesting touches that are available on its wines. This designation of origin includes the towns of Adeje, Arona, Vilaflor, San Miguel de Abona, Granadilla de Abona, Arico and Fasnia, areas in which the constant sun hours and the arid ecosystem results in the most surprising wines.

The trade winds, the key

So how is it possible to produce high quality wines in such an arid place? The answer is in the trade winds, presents on the whole archipiélago and responsible for keeping the humidity in the grape stumps. In fact, the volcanic influence, whose floor is characterized by its mineral wealth and the organic matter, is fundamental to understand how special may become these white wines.

In the same way, the hard orography of this area, in which we can find continuous microclimates, the access is specially difficult, so the majority of the work that local farmers do is respectful to the most artisan tradition. The production is therefore not specially wide, but its characteristic flavours that surprise to everybody who tastes them.

Standing whites

At least, the 60% of the wines in Abona are white. Precisely, this kind of grape is the less strict with the nutrients, which means that the lands of this region are perfect for its development.

About the wines? Experts say that there are almond and lychee notes inside them, and even tropical hints that come from the banana or the guava. In any case, everyone that decides to try these wines will find aromatic options, which are balanced and easy for the palate.

If you are interested in trying some of the White varieties that this designation of origin offers, come to our restaurant La Torre and let our staff give you the best advices to choose the perfect one for you. Don’t forget that, in terms of wine, rules must be broken. The pairing is not a color issue, it depends on the acidity. These wines are so soft that there are perfectly combinable with the classic fish and seafood, but also with a Good cheese or -why not?- with a stewed meat.

Also, remember that the region of Abona offers red and rosé options that are as interesting and special as the white ones, despite the fact that there are less known than them. There’s no doubt, this is a great way to immerse yourself in the wine culture of Tenerife, with some of the most exceptional choices of the island.
