Holiday plans have progressed a lot since the touristic boom that the island of Tenerife went through in the 70s. In the past we used to offer our visitors a destination full of sun and beach to relax and forget their worries while lying on a hammock. However, trends are changing and the current visitor is very conscious of the benefits of keeping active, especially in a place that has so many possibilities for sport enthusiasts.
You haven’t spent the whole year lifting weights in the gym to leave the habit during your holidays. If you are looking for a different plan and, definitely, active holidays in Tenerife, we suggest that you follow these proposals:
Hiking is King on the island
Local people know very well that the only way to get to the most beautiful places of Tenerife is on foot. Discovering the magic of Anaga, observing the seven islands from Teide’s peak, going across the shore with the most different forms in Taganana or watching the most spectacular ravines, like Masca or Barranco del Infierno, are some of the mandatory visits for sports lovers. If you also want to live the full experience and meet other hiking enthusiasts, we recommend to register in the next edition of the Tenerife Walking Festival, that will be celebrated between the next 22nd and 26th of May.
Golf at your doorstep
Do not try looking for other golf courses and enjoy the privileged location of Hotel Suite Villa María during your stay. There is a 9 hole golf course at our doorstep called “Los Lagos” where we have direct access to; and only a 3 minute drive away, you will find 18 hole Championship course “Golf Costa Adeje”. If you wish to spend your holidays practicing your favourite sport, please ask our Reception Team and they will advise you of the special rates that we offer our guests of the different golf courses on the island.
Paragliding and climbing for the most adventurous ones
The sides of the island and its unusual and rough land are the ideal stage for a paragliding trip. This activity, not suitable for the ones that suffer vertigo, has increased its number of devotees’ year-by-year and it is the perfect plan to see -from a bird’s eye view- Tenerife’s different volcanic structures. But if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground and do not want to risk, why not choose the climbing and try to climb the spectacular walls of the island. In the area of Arico, in the south-east of the island, you will find a few places to practice this activity, but we recommend to go there with an experienced company.
Tradition, also in sports
Finding out about the cultural heritage of Canary Islands is a “must” during your stay. Apart from our well- known traditions, such as the gastronomy, the local celebrations etc, the Canary Islands also has many homemade sports and games that could be of your interest. The “Canarian fight” (Lucha Canaria), the pole game, the Canarian ball or the shepherd’s jump, preserve the essence of the islands and are an important source of knowledge about the archipelago’s history.
Like a fish in the water
Tenerife is the ideal island to practice water sports. Surf, kitesurf, snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking are very popular amongst water sports lovers. The Atlantic Ocean offers endless possibilities and the bottom of the Ocean are some of the most admired places in the world. If you get the chance to rent a boat, dare to swim in the open sea, you will feel more alive than ever.
